1. Independent Artist and Releases -

Issued in the US by the artist or an independent record label (i.e., not distributed by a major international label).

Must be (a) issued or (b) reached its commercial peak between October 1, 2008 - September 30, 2009.

An album released in a previous year but which hits its commercial peak in this year can be nominated this year provided that the artist did not win an award with regard to that album in the earlier year.

2. Independent Album of the Year

Must meet the criteria described in (1) above, and

May be a new studio or live album.  May not be an EP.

3. Male Vocalist or Female Vocalist of the Year

Must have had a lead vocal performance that meets the criteria in (1) above. 

Must be on a full album or an EP issued by that artist (not just a guest appearance).

4. Duo or Group of the Year

Must have had a duo or group vocal performance that meets the criteria in (1) above.

Must be on a full album or an EP issued by the duo or group (not just a guest appearance).

5. New Artist

Must have had a performance that meets the criteria in (1) above.

Must not have previously released a full CD substantially as the same act/artist being nominated.

6. Lifetime Achievement Award

Must be a performer or substantial figure in the soul music world.

Career must have spanned at least 20 years.

Must have a notable career of great achievement.

7. Major label Album of the Year -

New studio or live album issued or distributed by a major international label in the US.

Must be (a) issued or (b) reached its commercial peak between October 1, 2008 - September 30, 2009.
