Sometimes the best way forward is to take a look back. And that’s what’s happening on this funky cover of the Les McCann and Eddie Davis tune “Compared To What.”

The song finds band leader and sax player/ flute player Dr. James Benson and The Gow Dow Experience delving deep into the jazz funk territory with the aid of then Cal Poly Pomona student and mega studio session singer Josie James (Jazz Crusaders, Bert Bacharach) and jazz session guitarist Roy Gaines (Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight). The song is taken from the June 23rd 2015 release The Gow Dow Experience which sees its first first commercial release in the digital format since it's limited release on vinyl in 1973.
