Flashback Soul: Natalie Cole Hopes That “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)”

The late Natalie Cole had a smile that lit up every room she entered, as well as a personal and vocal warmth that drew audiences to her throughout her long career in music.

It doubtless wasn’t easy for Natalie living in the shadow of her famous father, Nat King Cole. It’s said that early in her career all but her father’s old label, Capitol Records, refused to sign her because she preferred R&B to the jazz standards that were his forte.  But Natalie soon made those other labels regret their decision. Released in 1975, Cole’s debut album Inseparable shot quickly up the charts, reaching # 18 on the Billboard 200, and received gold-certification in sales. We feature here Cole performing one of her two number #1 R&B hit singles from her debut, “This Will Be,” on The Midnight Special.  Enjoy.
