If you’ve ever heard the artist Rachelle Ferrell, you no doubt remember that voice. With a multi-octave range, and a singular gift for dynamics and nuanced expression, Ferrell never ceases to amaze.  And she’s so much more than just a premier vocalist. Her jazz piano chops take a back seat to no other’s, and her songwriting is renowned for its honesty and intimacy. She’s a complete and unique artist and has been consistently so since her debut album Somethin’ Else released in 1990.

We feature here Ferrell in 2001 performing live the single “I Can Explain” from her # 1 jazz album Individuality (Can I Be Me).  Written by Ferrell, the track is a poignant apologia to a lover who has found another. Among other magical moments, listen at around the 4 minute mark as Ferrell extends the word  “else” for nearly 18 seconds with so much pain it’s palpable. This is a performance for the ages. Enjoy.
