Listening Room: Jason Miles delivers all-star live tribute to Grover Washington, Jr.

In an industry where copycatting and contrivance is too often encouraged and true creativity and innovation is needed but not always rewarded, Jason Miles has stood his ground as a true musical visionary. From his groundbreaking synth programming on three classic Miles Davis masterpieces to his master work in both the R&B and contemporary jazz arenas with artists like Luther Vandross and David Sanborn, he is a musical treasure.

One of Jason’s musical friends with whom he worked was the legendary Grover Washington, Jr., a longtime SoulTracks favorite. So, when Jason decided to put together an all-star band to play musical tribute to Grover, we and many fans around the world followed. And the recording of the band’s live performance has become the brand new release, To Grover With Love, Live In Japan (click here to see our review).

As Jason tells us: "With 'To Grover with Love, Live in Tokyo' I have tried to bring the audience closer to the great sound of contemporary jazz and groove that I heard in the NY clubs back in the 1970’s and 80’s yet give it a modern spin. Grover's great music from the 70’s and 80’s was at the forefront of that sound and I have the right players on this album to reintroduce this great vibe to the current audience and the ones who want to catch that special vibe this music gave to us."
