Listening Room: The Philly Soul sound of Uncle Larry's Band

Virginia-born Larry E Richardson, aka Uncle Larry, was raised in a house of music, and when his family moved to Philadelphia, he became immersed in that town’s incredible music scene. He began “doo-wopping” and then turned to guitar. Some guitar strings broke and then, as he describes it, “I heard this song, ‘Rescue Me,’ and its killer bass line. I figured it out on the four strings I had left and then BAM!, I became a Bass player.”

Soon, Larry was playing in the East and Southern US for artists like Al Green, Johnny Taylor and Chuck Jackson. But his big break came when Philly production legend Norman Harris gave him a call to be part of the band for soul stars Blue Magic. It led to more success as both a bass player and a songwriter for some of the big Philly stars.
