Lost Gem: Heather Headley Asks Jesus to “Bring Him Back”

In 2012, the Tony award-winning actress and Grammy-nominated vocalist Heather Headley quietly released her fourth album, Only One in the World. The record had almost no advance publicity, apart from Headley’s own postings on social media, and at the time she was starring in The Bodyguard on London’s West End and presumably was unable to support the release fully. The album peaked at only #187 on the Billboard 200, which is a shame, because it contains some real gems, most notably the track “Bring Him Back.”

Written by Headley and Keith Thomas, the track is a showcase for Headley’s beautiful, strong and supple voice as she pleads with Jesus to bring her man back. The production is a deft melding of Southern gospel, country and R&B flavors set to ¾ time, so the music swings delicately beneath Headley’s engaging performance.  Enjoy.
