Soul Tracks - Tracking the World's Greatest Soul Music

Mike Calhoun

Mike Calhoun

Greetings, SoulTrackers.  I am back with a new CD entitled "The One."  It's an inspirational CD designed for you to "dance and pray" at the same time. To describe the sound, just think of the Dazz Band going to church. Since I was a principle songwriter in the band and helped develop the group's sound from the beginning I have blended the soulful sounds of the band with the spiritual words from my religious experiences.

On this CD I have a few guest stars, Willie Ross(The O'Jays Band), Tracie Hines, Stic Man(Dead Prez), Alltrina Grayson(Tyler Perry's The Marriage Counselor), BeLoyd Taylor(EWF), Debaniese Byrd(Dennis Edwards), Carlos Jones(Plus Band) just to name a few. This is my first record for my new label TMG(TateMusicGroup)and it has been a great experience working with the Inspirational Record Company and Christian Book Publishers.  I hope you enjoy this music influenced by my late Mother Eleanor Davis (RIP) and her faith in the Word and Gods effect on my life. Be Blessed...

Mike Calhoun has accomplished greatness in music for over 30 years. A founding member of the Grammy Award Winning "Dazz Band," the singer/ composer and guitarist from Cleveland, OH, has committed himself to music that magnifies God.

Mike Calhoun, a prolific songwriter and guitar player was influenced by many stellar rock guitar players that came out of the late sixties/early seventies such as Jimi Hendrix,Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Phil Keaggy (Glass Harp) and Joe Walsh (James Gang,Eagles). This musical influence equipped Mike Calhoun to be a founding father of the Grammy Award-Winning Dazz Band.

The group's unique blend of R&B, Jazz, Pop and Funk dazzled audiences across the country from 1978 to 1987. Originally Kinsman Dazz signed with Twentieth Century Fox Records where Mike was mentored by the likes of Marvin Gaye and Phillip Bailey (Earth Wind & Fire). The Group eventually moved to Motown Records where Mike had the experience of working with Stevie Wonder and other great talents that were part of the Motown stable. While Mike's guitar playing has always stood out, he was also one of the primary songwriters for the Dazz Band. He wrote hits like "Invitation to Love", co-wrote "Knock Knock", "Shake it Up" and "Freaky Loving" and continued to pump out quality material over the years.

Mike Calhoun left the Dazz Band before their breakup to sign with MCA Records but was still being managed by Joe Simone (Dazz Band's manager) until Joe's death. In 1985 Joe Bendo, Tim LaRose and George Cappellini helped Mike sign a deal along with lead singer Juan Lively forming the group Voyeur. Michael & Ike Wiley (from the Dazz Band) joined him on the album. When Juan fell ill, the contract ended after one album.

Mike Calhoun did return to the Dazz Band for one more album "Joy Stick and then went on to tour with the group Identity which was a reggae band signed with Mango Island Records. Mike toured with Identity for three years.

Mike Calhoun returned to Cleveland in 1992 to write and help produce an album for Cozette Morgan (R&B, Pop) that got rave reviews in Europe and Asia. In 1997, Mike then toured with The Travis Haddix Blues Band for two years.

Mike Calhoun was presented with a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Platinum Membership in 1994 at the opening of the facility and played in the "Allstar" band formed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the "topping off" ceremony. He was awarded for his song writing & playing with the Dazz Band.

Mike Calhoun left Cleveland and was showcased in a club in Louisville, Ky. owned by Jerry Green. He was inspired during this time to start his own band. So in 2002 he returned back to Cleveland where he wrote and produced his first solo CD "In Blue" "In Blue" is an electric project with elements of rock, funk, rap, jazz, blues and even a few gospel tunes that give tribute to his spiritual roots. "In Blue" was released on Little Fish Records  in 2007. Blues Legend Travis Haddix has since re-released "In Blue" on his Wann Sonn label. He was also featured on Soul-Patrol's historic album that also has appearances by Public Enemy, the Dells and Chico Hamilton. Mike (Kid Funkadelic)Hampton calls Mike a funk pioneer.

I very much enjoyed the cd.

I very much enjoyed the cd. You will find funky beats, slow tempo, rap and traditional gospel. There's something in it for everyone. It is clear that Mike Calhoun is truely a messenger. Listening to this CD you would not only find your toe tapping to such amazing rhythms but you will find your spiritual side being nourished. Listen to his words and you connect to his soul, his life, his struggles, and his joys. Enjoy the slow tempo cuts in his most humble of hearts, such as "By Your Side" and "Stay"....to the hard street chords in "Holla" and "Ghetto Preacher" and you will find a man who's gone through some hard knocks but knows where his blessings come from. Not only was I loving the music but each song creates a visual that relates to everyday life. When I heard "Cold World" it instantly put me in the mind of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." It's hard to pick a favorite so while listening to it over and over it's got to be "Fear No Evil." Coming from the 70's funk era, Mike Calhoun stands tall again. You will be delighted with the new direction of his new sound. There are other artists out there with similar calling and it has reached the masses tremendously and wish the same for Mike. Reaching is his goal and this CD "THE ONE" does it. You can't help but to give praise to God, waving your hands in the air. I'd call it a "deliverance of his testimony given to you in the gift of song." Mike Calhoun I wish you all the best.
