We’ve been informed that Jay Proctor, the lead vocalist of the classic soul group Jay & the Techniques, is seriously ill following surgery from colon cancer. Working with popular producer Jerry Ross, Proctor led the group through its heyday in the late 60s with song like “Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie,” “Keep the Ball Rollin,” and “Baby Make Your Own Sweet Music.”
The Allentown, Pennsylvania group Jay & the Techniques was an anomaly during the 60s, as it sported an integrated lineup. And their sound was equally tough to categorize, as they blended pop and soul in a way that won over both audiences. They had several hits in the US and UK, before fading in the early 70s. They made a minor comeback on the disco charts in the mid-70s with “I Feel Love Coming On” and “Number Onederful” before fading from the charts for good.

Proctor went solo and released a few albums, the most recent of which was 2006’s Still Got Flow. He also continued performing with various line-ups of the Techniques for the next 30+ years, still sounding top notch.
