First Listen: Mary J Blige gives "U + Me" a Love Lesson

(March 24, 2017) The man or woman you just knew you'd spend your life with is now your ex: the locks are changed, the rings have been pawned, and that last pint of ice cream is dust. The railing, sobfests and salty social media posts stop as the anger dissipates and you seek introspection about what was - a tone that the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, has put to use in her latest single, "U + Me (Love Lesson)."

In a 180 degree turn from her last single, "Thick of It," "Love Lesson" is less melodramatic and more meditative; Mary's cooled off (somewhat), but still dealing with the repercussions in this mellowed out, mid-tempo almost new-agey groove that arrives and ends on a humble: "I was ridin' wherever you were goin', at times I wanted to leave but didn't want to be lonely/Can't deny the fact you were my only.....and I just can't deny the fact we don't belong together, guess it ain't the real thang."

Hovering between 'he/ain't [expletive]' and 'I'm over it,' "U + Me" has a chill vibe ready for spring riding, wine sipping and however else fans want to receive it. If "Thick of It" was the stumble, "Love Lesson" is the rising.....and it's time to get on up.
