As for Mehcad's own style, it's been described as "a blend between southern hip hop, adult urban contemporary and R&B with a hint of rock 'n' roll flare." "Tears Away" certainly has a rock 'n' roll flare and a sound comparable to Lenny Kravitz and Seal. Mehcad sings about the emotional aftereffects of a break-up.

Chronicling his long journey to make music, Mechad posted on Instagram: "My peers were at premieres while I was in the basement. My friends were at parties while I was in the booth. My colleagues were at events while I was trying to create one. My mentor was the mic, my guide was my heart and my only competition was [my] concept of the old me. My fear didn’t stand a chance. It took me six summers to get my music out to the world."
Mehcad Brooks is by no means the first actor to release music after gaining prominence on screen. For instance, Hugh Laurie ("House") has two blues albums under his belt, and Tyler James Williams ("Everybody Hates Chris", "Detroit") dropped a hip-hop mixtape in 2015.
