October 23, 2022 – Welcome back to Another Groove, our series devoted to new music that is neither pure soul nor R&B but which has elements of those genres and may please your ears.  This week we feature the track “New Body Rhumba” by LCD Soundsystem.

LCD is a Grammy award-winning, Brooklyn-based alternative band formed in 2002 by its frontman and multi-instrumentalist, James Murphy. Its stock in trade is a burbling electronica accented by indie rock idioms and anchored by dance music beats.  Our featured track is from the new film White Noise starring Adam Driver, where it accompanies an unexpected and joyous closing dance sequence.

I dare say there’s never been a rhumba quite like this one; it’s a well-crafted mishmash of styles that somehow blend together seamlessly.  The track opens with a vibe akin to the “Plastic Soul”/R&B of David Bowie’s “Fame” era, with Murphy delivering a lusty, full-throated vocal that has all the bravado and swagger of the late Jim Morrison. But at approximately the 5 minute mark, the track gracefully pivots to the expansive, near operatic grandeur of Joshua Tree-era U2, with Murphy now providing a soaring, emotive vocal that gives Bono a run for his money.  If you like your dance music with electronica and rock sprinkled on top, this song is your ticket.  Enjoy.
