Imagine a 12 piece band that creates dance anthems rooted in funk, techno, house, salsa and pop. That is the vision of the collective known as Blakbot, led by Detroit native Kenyatta Scott. Their latest single is a nine minute dance suite entitled “Smile” that immediately displays the joy needed for you to do what the title suggests.

On “Smile” lead vocals are held by Kari Epps, and she is able to keep a celebratory mood as the track evolves over multiple genres. She sings of the happiness found in seeing someone that you love and care about. Detroit techno and funk are at the forefront here but various elements of other styles and influences are apparent. Some may think it would be difficult to keep a listener entertained for so long, but the beauty of Blakbot is that as different vibes are created throughout the song, the melody and hook are never lost.
