First Listen: Brother Theodore paints a funky picture on ".IMG"

(July 23, 2019) “.IMG” is lead single from Brother Theodore’s debut album St. Ann. Those three letters preceded by a period is what computer listeners will see at the end of a photo file on their computer. The file name might be band.img, and you will know without even opening the file that it contains the photo of a band.

And from the opening notes of “.IMG” you will know what kind of band the Ted Gould led Brother Theodore is and the type of music you will be treated to on St. Ann. The image is of a funk band led by a bassist with a thumb that plucks and thumps those strings with the power of hammer of Thor. I see an electric organist who can move from road house on Saturday night to the church house on Sunday morning and a guitarist who has a mastery of soul, blues and rock guitar playing.

Bassist Gould crafted a band that represents his time as a side man for a host of New Orleans based artists. That fact says something about his talent. Now, Gould steps to the forefront with Brother Theodore, and if “.IMG” proves one thing, it is that Gould and ready for his close up. “.IMG” has it all – strong harmonies and a band that is versed in a soul, rock, jazz, blues and moves seamlessly to each in this nearly six-minute of a workout song.

In addition to Gould’s band mates, Cam Perrige on guitar, Eamon Flynn on Rhodes and B3, Scott Keller on drums and vocalists Sanara Pippins, Tamar T. Gillette, and Nate Cameron, Jr., “.IMG,” features guest musicians Matt “Dr.” Fink, who was Prince’s long-time keyboardist, and Levi Seacer Jr. who played with Sheila E. You can learn a lot about a guy from the company he keeps. Check out “.IMG” here.
