First Listen: Caledonia takes us for a ride on "Taxi"

(January 4, 2020) When a band is afforded an opportunity to record at an historic studio that captured special moments in soul, pop and country music, you can bet they will bring their 'A' game.  And when Caldonia was waxing their debut project at the Fame Studio in Muscle Scholes, Alabama, the group members immediately grasped the electrifying vibe surrounding the acclaimed hit making studio that brought us countless legends like Aretha (Franklin) and Otis Redding, plus more recently acclaimed acts including Alabama Shakes. Yes, Caldonia are rightfully considered newbie artists who launched their journey in 2019.  However, in their very young career, their potent one-two and more punch of Motown, rock and roots have already drawn raves in their hometown and surrounding cities in spreading their unique retro and modern marriage of southern soul.

Now in a proper introduction of this Huntsville, Alabama sextet, First Listen focuses on “Taxi,” a most engaging track from the band’s EP, …Is Hurtin’ for You, that successfully demonstrates Caldonia’s complete musical package.  This pleasing musical stew sizzles in funk, blues, soul and gospel, wrapped up with country rock overtones.  From the electric piano intro, Keyton Fike's lead voice blends seamlessly with the brass and rhythm section, whether in a playful mode or flexing those high notes.  If “Taxi” and the rest of …Is Hurtin’ for You reflects any indication of what’s to come from this band’s solid talents, Caldonia’s flair for southern soul will be rolling right along into 2020 and beyond with plenty of stops into the Fame Studios.
