(March 25, 2023) When relatives of a prominent artist release music, they are often compared to their famous family member(s).  While understanding such comparisons, they want to be recognized for their own body of work. David Ruffin, Jr. is no different.

As his name suggests, he’s the son of David Ruffin, Sr., one of The Temptations’ most iconic lead singers.  Ruffin, Jr. (aka D-Ruff) has paid tribute to his legendary father by singing his music on various stages including on the FOX TV show, I Can See Your Voice, in 2022.  While continuing his father’s legacy, D-Ruff is making his own way as a singer, songwriter, and actor.  For example, he wrote and sang the chorus on the 90’s hip-hop classic “Gin & Juice” by Snoop Dogg.

D-Ruff has also released several independent recordings over the years.  One of them is “Cry Cry Cry,our latest First Listen.  According to D-Ruff, the song – which was originally conceived in the winter of 2010 - is designed for those whose hearts may have been broken.  You can hear the heartbreak in this emotive ballad as D-Ruff contemplates why his woman gives him grief when all he tries to do is give her love.  It doesn’t make sense to him that she only wants to make him sad and mad.  That can move any man to tears, despite the old adage that a man ain't supposed to cry, as David Ruffin, Sr. sang in “I Wish It Would Rain.”  But as he says in the next line, he’s got to cry because crying eases the pain.  D-Ruff just might agree.
