Dawn Richard is a singer/songwriter who first attracted wide attention when, as part of the  MTV reality program Making the Band 3, Sean “Puffy” Combs chose her to be a member of  Danity Kane.  Her time in that group was tumultuous, with the band breaking up for a second time in 2014 amid allegations of fisticuffs between Richard and fellow member Aubrey O’Day. Meanwhile, in 2011, Richard also embarked on a solo career, which thus far has resulted in a trilogy of releases, the most recent of which, Redemption, was issued independently late last year. Her music trends toward futuristic, alt R&B with inventive beats and textures that frame her smooth, soulful voice.

We feature here from Redemption the track “Sands,” a swirling, surrealistic jam with a trip hop vibe.  Fans of Jhene Aiko, Kehlani, and other R&B artists with a penchant for dreamy atmospherics may especially like her style. Enjoy.
