(February 4, 2022) She’s the pride of DC, and one of the leaders in the indie soul movement. And 2021 brought to music fans the return of singer and songwriter Debórah Bond via her terrific album compass:I and the hot single “Radio,” which was nominated as Song of the Year in the SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Awards.

Now, as we enter 2022, Debórah has reimagined five of the songs from compass:I with the help of members of Butcher Brown (Corey Fonville on drums and Morgan Burrs on guitar) as well as Trey Sorrells (Sax), Brandon Lane (bass), and Dre King (keys). The result is Bonded Session 2020, a live performance audio and visual project, recorded in November 2020 during the heart of the COVID pandemic shutdowns. The EP deftly captures a group of artists basking in the enjoyment of their craft -- at a time when the state of the world was otherwise silencing them.

Debórah tells us: “There were no places to really perform and things were extremely slow. I decided on a whim to treat myself to a birthday gift that would fulfill my strong desire to sing with live musicians and have some form of musical release.”

Today’s SoulTracks First Listen is the group’s live interpretation of “door,” a love song that projects a completely different aura than its original studio form. Its reinterpretation gives the feel of a gloriously hot summer night in a jazz club, circa 1980, as far from this cold February Detroit evening as I could possibly imagine.

Bonded Sessions 2020 is one of the early treats of this new year, and one that we think SoulTrackers will cherish. Check out “door” below, and then go to the bottom of the page to listen to the full EP.
