(February 8, 2023) When the legendary Thom Bell passed away late last year, many took a step back in time to revisit his extensive library. He helped to craft the sound of the 70s and some will argue that his sound may not ever be effectively replicated. Despite his passing, Bell’s imprint on soul music remains, and Wilmington, NC singer-songwriter Desi is doing a great job of pushing the Philly Sound forward with his latest single, "Make Up Baby."
With a lush arrangement and instrumentation that evolves throughout the track, Desi gives us a ballad that equally showcases his tenor and falsetto. "Make Up Baby* deals with how relationships have their ebbs and flows, but the desire to take things seriously and "stop the childish things" must be the goal in order to make it work. Fans of The Stylistics and Blue Magic will feel a sense of familiarity in Desi's performance but there is no doubt that Desi in his singing and production stands alone as an artist worth discovering.

While a full project is still on the way, "Make Up Baby" is a great way to kick off the new year. It is also an excellent example by Desi of how an artist can effectively step into the past in order to bring listeners to the present.
