(October 17, 2020) Chicago soul and blues man Devin B. Thompson not only has a classic soul voice, he has his own sense of history. He grew up playing trumpet and singing with his older brother’s band, learning while covering music of the masters, from Miles Davis to Frank Sinatra to Marvin Gaye.
So it makes perfect sense that on his highly anticipated new album Tales of the Soul he would cover some lesser known songs from classic soul and blues singers. And that includes his wonderful take on Joe Simon’s 1972 gem, “Something You Can Do Today.”

Devin tells us, "Although I was definitely familiar with Joe Simon I was not aware of the song ‘Something You Can Do Today' until David Earl introduced me to it. The first thing I noticed about it was the gospel like feel to it. Almost like being in church when the preacher says if you want to be saved don’t put off for tomorrow something you can do today! You can also transfer those harmonies right into church. Of course Joe Simon oozes soul, so it's the perfect combination. I feel at home most when I get sing soul music with a tinge of gospel in there! I’m glad David Earl turned me on to it.”
