(February 11, 2018) "Back in the Day" is more than the title of drummer Eric Valentine's latest record. The song is an old school celebration that possesses an analogue vibe for a good reason. Velvet Groove, the contemporary jazz drummer's upcoming album found him gathering a collection of top-flight players to come together on this album. These days, that might mean each player and vocalist records their part in their personal studio and digitally sends his or her contribution to a producer who puts it together.
Back in the day, those same artists would meet in a studio and make music, and that is the method Valentine used to cut "Back in the Day." The song is not an ode to a specific era. Rather, it allows the listener to reflect fondly on their individual 'good old days' whether they fell in the '60s, '90s or early 2000s. "Back in the Day" gives listeners permission to recall those things each embraces about their past - gatherings with family, good food and card games after church all set to the soul, jazz and R&B that served as the soundtracks of our lives.
