First Listen: Kenny Lattimore helps Freda Payne find "Love"

(May 14, 2021) She has been a star of the R&B and jazz worlds for more than a half century, and he is one of the smooth soul men of our time. And together, they're taking on a jazz classic in big band fashion.

Freda Payne is a singer who has literally generations of fans, and she is still going strong into her 70s on stage and more recently with her brand new album, Let There Be Love, featuring fully orchestrated new versions of classic pop and jazz songs. Several weeks ago, we featured her new duet with the ageless Johnny Mathis, and today we have the title track from the album, a Nat King Cole remake highlighting Freda's glorious back-and-forth with the great Kenny Lattimore.

The song feels like an anolmaly in 2021: a heavily produced number with full orchestra and an obvious affection for the great bands of the 30s-60s. But it is a welcome anomaly, with great performances by two singers who show their versatility and musical chemistry. And of course to complete the circle, the classic song was recorded at the iconic Capitol Records studios.

Check out the fun "Let There Be Love" below, and welcome these two bright stars back to SoulTracks. And if you like it, check out the "behind the scenes" video on YouTube.
