First Listen: Full Flava handles Quincy Jones classic in remix

(August 5, 2019) Rob Derbyshire’s UK-based Full Flava production house has spotlighted glowing vocalists over the past two decades including CeCe Peniston, Carleen Anderson, and Chantay Savage. The team’s first release came in 2000 via a sonically faithful and fulfilling cover of “Betcha Wouldn’t Hurt Me,” a funky dancer from Quincy Jones’ 1981 album The Dude, featuring Patti Austin on lead vocals. Full Flava’s remake shined a light on British singer Donna Gardier, herself a recording artist since the early ‘90s who has since backed the likes of Sting and Billy Ocean on recording sessions and concert tours.

Nearly 20 years on, Full Flava has preserved the integrity of its interpretation (with Gardier’s unassuming delivery and down-to-earth phrasing intact) with a ‘2.0 Mix’ of “Betcha Wouldn’t Hurt Me.” Perking up the beat just enough to give the track an extra ounce of dance floor energy, most of the 2000 production’s arrangement elements are left intact. It’s a pleasant second revisit of a worthwhile song refreshingly free of many production gimmicks employed in remakes of classic soul tunes in this day in age.
