First Listen: Jean Carne gives some Philadelphia love in remix

(September 21, 2020) Amongst the cadre of Philly soul group Blue Magic’s defining 1970s ballads, “What’s Come over Me” holds a unique place. Originally recorded by the group for its 1974 debut album, the song ultimately achieved success the following year with the addition of vocals from southern R&B belle Margie Joseph.

It’s fitting that Georgia-born Jean Carne, who’s made some of her biggest marks with records cut in Philly, chose “What’s Come Over Me” for inclusion on her 2013 album, Flashback. Now, she’s released a new set entitled Jean Carne Sings Philadelphia, which contains a handful of new tracks supplemented with remixed versions of key cuts from Flashback.

Carne’s take on the tune is faithful to Blue Magic’s treatment of the wistful lyric. Her gentle yet colorful tone brings to mind Ted Mills’ falsetto, but with a slight twist. The arrangement is kept intact, as well—never resorting to unnecessary distractions from Carne’s delivery. Check it out below and let us know what you think of her reading of this true soul gem.
