Goldblum and Payne pair up for a reading of the much-loved fifties musical ballad, “Lazy Afternoon,” made famous by Barbra Streisand and later recorded by Regina Belle. Payne injects a contemplative warmth into the tune’s slowly stirring melody lines as Goldblum delves softly into thoughtfully placed fills and flourishes on the keys. Surrounded with bright sax punctuations and a cool guitar solo for good measure, the affair retains the quiet essence of the composition from start to finish. Many Payne fans will be familiar with her jazz roots from sixties albums for the Impulse and Sonet labels, as well as her return to the genre of 2014’s Come Back to Me Love. This new recording serves as an impressive testament to her continued growth in those stylings.
