(March 19, 2021)Natural Born Hustler, the soon to be released album from Lincoln, Neb. based soul band Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal, is as self-explanatory a name as you can get. Before the pandemic, which shuttered performance venues around the nation and world, few if any bands worked harder than this funky and soulful quintet. The band performed an average of 150 shows a year up until the pandemic closed live performance venues.

“Changing,” the latest advance single from Natural Born Hustler, is a cut that fulfills Hoyer’s desire to make music that is a part of an overall project that the listener can play while driving on a long trip. Hoyer’s rangy and emotive baritone embraces the honest lyrics about the difficult yet necessary decision to make changes.

The song evokes a period in the late 1960s and early 70s, and there is a reason why groups return to this era and why we music fans continue go right along with them. Those reasons can be heard in the smooth bassline delivered by Mike Keeling or Blake DeForest’s plaintive work on the trumpet, or the call and response of the backing vocalists on the chorus. “Changing” is the type of song that introduced a generation of fans to soul music, and we return to that sound – particularly in uncertain times – to hear something that speaks to real emotions.
