(July 12, 2019) Soul travels on the rails, the interstates and backroads, seas, rivers, lakes and airwaves. Whatever the mode of transportation may be, the music always manages to find welcoming ears and artists ready to be inspired – whether the highways, airways or boats take from the Mississippi Delta to New York, London or Lincoln, Nebraska. Soul music found Josh Hoyer in the heart of Cornhusker Nation, where he fronts an award-winning band called Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal.

Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal have cut four full length studio albums, one EP and a couple of live collections. The interstate or perhaps the airways took Hoyer to the big city to be a participant on season 12 of The Voice, so fans of that program may also be familiar with Hoyer’s vocals, which in terms of range and tone are equal parts soul, blues and country. [Note: Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal will be releasing a full-length album produced by Eddie Roberts on Color Red in the coming months]

Hoyer takes the formula that has brought him success with the Soul Colossal and led to his run on The Voice to his latest collaboration on the Color Red label with bassist Pete Shand, keyboardist Joe Tatton, guitarist Eddie Roberts (those three are also part of The New Mastersounds), drummer Jeff Franca (Thievery Corporation), and pedal steel guitarist John Macy, a band that is known as the Macy Sounds. They have released “The Loneliest I’ve Ever Been” as the collaborative project Josh Hoyer & the Macy Sounds. This track is a rollicking taste of soul, blues and country that has Muscle Shoals, Alabama coursing through its DNA. The infectious arrangement can almost make you forget that Hoyer’s lends his voice, which maneuvers between a gritty world weariness and a soaring sweetness, to a classic blues story that reminds us that a man is never as lonely as when she is present in the body but absent in the spirit. We’re proud to present the World Premiere of this song. Check it out here.
