(July 27, 2018) We've been following singer and pianist Kandace Springs for a few years now, as she has made her ascent from indie soul darling to major label soul and jazz star. Following her tremendous debut album, we were a bit underwhelmed by her 3 song EP a few months ago, but were looking forward to more of a stretch of her significant talent in her upcoming September 7 sophomore album, Indigo.

For the disc, Kandace is mixing originals and cover songs, and has brought in heavy hitter producers, including drummer/producer Karriem Riggins (Common, Erykah Badu), who takes the laboring ore on the album, with additional production by Jamie Hartman(Rag'n'Bone Man), Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae), and Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken (Rihanna).

In her approach to the album, Kandace, who is currently touring with Hall & Oates, says she asked “What would Nina Simone do if she had the technology of today? You could never put Nina in a box—she would do a blues followed a classical piece, a jazz standard and then a Beatles cover. This LP took a lot of inspiration from that—it’s a mix of everything that I am.”

For the first single and video, Kandace has chosen the lightly arranged midtempo, "Don't Need The Real Thing." The song is pretty understated, but she sounds good vocally, as usual. It's our newest SoulTracks First Listen. Check it out below and tell us what you think.
