(January 26, 2022) Just over a year ago, Larry Dodson was celebrating his 70th birthday as only he knew how, captured on YouTube featuring a live performance and many pats on the back from friends, family and fellow artists including Doug E. Fresh and Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King. After all, the Memphis native, also known as Larry D has been a R&B stalwart since the 60s as the original lead singer of The Bar-Kays.  And that group’s marvelous history shouts 27 albums (5 gold and 1 platinum) and many top charting hits like “Freak Show on the Dance Floor” and “Grown Folks,” with inductions into the R&B Hall of Fame and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.

Back to Larry D., he launched his long-awaited solo chapter in style by flexing his easygoing charm on the smooth romantic groove, “I’m Good,” as one of our popular First Listen segments.

With the follow-up First Listen to “I’m Good,” Larry D jump starts 2022 with “Just We” (on his Music Moves imprint), an offering that stirs the soul and fires up old-fashioned romance.  Appearing in the video for “Just We” is Larry D.’s wife of over fifty years, Marie Dodson, a touching choice simply illustrating dedication pays relationship dividends: “This one’s for the lovers/That never left one another.”

Jessica Ray, the daughter of Stax Records’ great Ray Griffin, joins Larry D. in this adult contemporary R&B/soul romance fest.  And the quiet storm soundtrack of pleasing keyboards compliments the mood of love in the classy degree.  Check out the now 71-year-old urban music treasure as he breaks down what’s all about “Just We.”
