Just days away from his 70th birthday and yet another milestone – the 50th anniversary of his first LP with the Bar-Kays (Black Rock), the “Freak Show on the Dance Floor” singer is embarking a bold new career move. A solo album is finally in the works, and the first single to come out of the sessions has arrived.

“I’m Good” is a dreamy mid-tempo urban contemporary groove that chronicles the mood of Charlie Wilson’s 21st century soul. There’s a good dose of infectious charm here. Along with Dodson’s vocal delivery, spiked with the right amount of sexy rasp, there’s a dose of romantic lyrics. Like a sweet Valentine’s Day card, Dodson (also known as Larry D) conveys his love so distinctively on the chorus: “Long as I got you, I’m good.” And deep inside, whether intentional or not, he even gives a careful wink and nod to the William Bell’s Stax classic “Every Day Will Be Like a Holiday”: “Every day is a holiday, so I celebrate/Girl you’re the best thing God ever made.

Check out the new single and let us know if “you’re good” with it.
