First Look: Leela James says to "Put It On Me"

(June 11, 2021) We've been following the talented Leela James since the early days of SoulTracks. Her ability to bring a timeless soul feel to modern R&B is a gift, and she has consistently delivered, album after album, for nearly 20 years.

Leela had a hit earlier this year with "Complicated," and now she returns with producer-supreme Rex Rideout for another sassy gem. "Put It On Me" is the tale of a woman who ignored all the signs and went for love with the wrong man, and now is fessing up:

Take a look at my eyes, they tell no lies. Look at my tears.
I guess I was wrong, trying to be so strong. The signs were so clear.

The piano-led ballad has an undeniable bluesy feel, both musically and lyrically, and James eats it up, delivering believable passion throughout the number. And the video shows that, after the initial tears, she's not going to wallow in her sorrow.
