(June 19, 2020) Back in the 1970s, there weren’t many vocal groups who could match the success of Philly soul giants, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. With Teddy Pendergrass providing the lead vocals and Gamble & Huff delivering iconic songs, The Blue Notes provided a decade’s worth of memorable hits like “The Love I Lost,” “Wake Up Everybody” and the #1 smash “If You Don’t Know Me By Now.”

For years after the departure of Pendergrass and the passing of Harold Melvin, the group soldiered on as Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, with Harold’s daughter Trudy Melvin keeping the flame burning. After Trudy’s untimely passing earlier this year, a new version of the group has materialized, consisting of lead singer Sugarbear Aikens along with Sonny King, Frankie Lee and Roger Banks, and going by the moniker The Legendary Bluenotes.

The Legendary Bluenotes have teamed up with  Philly soul music producer Butch Ingram to create a new song that is designed to support the Black Lives Matter movement. "Never Too Late" has elements of classic Philadelphia soul, and Sugarbear's voice certainly resembles Teddy P’s legendary baritone.

“Never Too Late” should find an audience among classic soulheads. Check it out below and tell us what you think.
