(May 8, 2018) Good Thing, the highly anticipated project from soul man Leon Bridges, dropped a few days ago.  And after one listen it’s clear what all the fuss is about. This is a record that finds Bridges once again diving deep into that classic soul, funk and blues.  Still nothing on Good Thing sounds dated, and that is especially true of “Bad Bad News,” the track being featured in this First Listen.

With that driving bass line and the popping work on the drums, “Bad Bad News” sports a rhythm section that is percussive and insistently funky. Bridges’ delivery, which is both rapid fire and conversational, shows that he has been keeping track of what his happening in much of contemporary R&B, while the call and response on the hook is rooted in traditional gospel and blues. The cut also features jazz flourishes from the guitar, keyboard and horn improvisation that brings this excellent cut to a swinging conclusion. Check it out here.
