(October 20, 2022) Lynn Davis has had a long and quite accomplished career as a backing vocalist and songwriter. She’s worked as a singer supporting everyone from George Duke, who hired her to join his band shortly around the time she graduated from high school, to Diane Schuur.

Davis shined on any opportunity she received to be a lead vocalist. The best and most notable example came on the disco/funk jam “I Want You For Myself,” which was featured on Duke’s 1979 album Master of the Game. Still, Davis’ sweet spot was as a backing vocalist and songwriter, and she has crafted a well-respected career serving in those capacities.

Still, a vocalist with Davis’ chops will always have a chance to sing, and of course she can pen the tune if need be. Davis returns to the forefront on the sensual and smooth ballad “Can I Come Over.” Thematically, the tune expresses a sentiment similar “I Want You For Myself,” but in this case Davis treats us to a slow jam instead of an uptempo dance tune.

Vocally, Davis is in a conversational mode as she has a phone conversation with her guy and asks if she can come by. However, when Davis needs to expand her range to drive the point home, she showcases the type of vocal power that ensures that this singer will always be in the contacts of anyone looking for a topflight backup singer. Hopefully, Davis isn’t ready step out of the spotlight just yet.
