(May 5, 2021) Marcus Machado has been lending his guitar licks to vocalists and instrumentalists for years. If you want to find a young millennial musician who will hit you with some straight blues picking that will remind you of B.B. King, or who can give you some hard rock distortion, Machado is your guy. Rolling Stone magazine recognized that back in 2014 when the bible of all things music named him as one of their Young Guns – or guitarists that we should be watching.

SoulTrackers have been watching and listening to Machado for a while, as he’s been featured on several projects by some of our favorite artists. But now, the guitarist steps up front with a project all his own. Aquarius Purple is Machado’s new album, and it features instrumental and vocal tracks. In that way, Aquarius Purple is a throwback to an era of R&B music when bands used their albums to showcase a full palette of skills. That Machado would make such an album is not surprising. He’s a student of music who first picked up a guitar at the age of two. His parents raised him on the good stuff musically. His musician dad turned Machado on to rock acts like Jimi Hendrix while his mother fed him a steady diet of jazz (John Coltrane) and R&B (Earth, Wind and Fire.)

Fans get to hear Machado put all of those influences together on “Get By,” the single from Aquarius Purple that is featured in this First Listen. “Get By” is fuses Hendrix styled psychedelic guitar licks with contemporary R&B percussion topped off with soulful vocal improvisations. It’s a mashup that allows Machado to showcase his imaginative creativity as a soloist and it is amazing how much he manages to pack into a track that lasts a little less than three minutes.  Anyway, check out Machado’s “Get By” here.
