World Premiere: Marion Meadows has the nighttime jam going on

(March 31, 2021) It’s hard to believe that soprano saxman Marion Meadows has been putting it down for three plus decades. His sound is so energetic and fresh that you’d swear that he was new on the scene. However, his new project, Twice as Nice, which is due to drop on April 23, will be his 16th as a leader. Perhaps one explanation for Meadows’ freshness is his ongoing evolution. The saxophonist recently earned a doctorate degree in Arts and Humanities from Wilberforce University.

And the cut “Yesterday Is Gone” showcases Meadow’s ability to make the kind of music that is accessible to lovers of R&B and contemporary jazz. The track pairs him with a buttery tenor of vocalist Donnelly Smallwood on a pensive tune about memories and regret.

Meadows is a very melodic saxophonist and a creative improvisor and he is energized by the opportunity to engage in a musical conversation with the talented Smallwood. “Yesterday Is Gone,” was written by Chris ‘Big Dog’ Davis, a Grammy nominated songwriter and producer who has worked with Will Downing and Maysa, just to name a few. His deft touch shines through on “Yesterday Is Gone.” The track harkens back to the fusion of R&B and jazz that ruled quiet storm radio starting in the 1980s, yet the track sounds does not sound dated.

We’re proud to present the World Premiere of “Yesterday is Gone.” Check it out here.
