(February 28, 2023) There is one thing that we all know about trouble, it’s this: We can hide from it or confront it. We can run from trouble or toward it, but we can never fully avoid it. What we can do in our own way is try to prepare for it. That is the message in Mica Millar’s rollicking, retro soul banger “Trouble.”

That knowledge is something that Millar, a breakout British soul singer whose album Heaven Knows generating all kinds of buzz, learned the hard way. Millar began working on this project in 2020 right when Covid forced a global lockdown. She had to shift to working on the album remotely and if that wasn’t trouble enough, Millar broke her back and narrowly averted being permanently paralyzed.

Millar chose not to defer or abandon her dreams in the face of adversity. Instead, she confronted and ran toward the trouble. The resulting album, Heaven Knows, dropped last year to critical acclaim. “Trouble” is a retro soul gem that finds Millar using her power packed and rangy, husky voice to remind listeners that adversity does not build character, it builds character.

Millar packs a lot of knowledge in this the minute slice of perfection. “Trouble” is a song about the choices people make and how they rise the occasion or succumb to it. The tune also serves as a reminder that risk is inherent in life and that there’s a cost in trying to avoid risk. “Could make a path where others fail to tread/Or choose the wrong place, wrong time/And you might end up dead,” she sings.

Millar’s cause has been championed by major influencers across Europe, and after hearing “Heaven Knows,” it’s easy to understand their passion. Millar has the vocal and writing chops to be a soul music star. Let “Trouble” be your gateway to Heaven Knows and then go all the way in.
