(May 28, 2017) Los Angeles, California has been consistently delivering a series of left-of-center jazz and soul hybrid projects from artists as far ranging as Kamasi Washington and The Internet to Terrace Martin and Ronald Bruner, Jr.  With this week’s release of their junior full-length project, Voyager, L.A.’s Moonchild has no plans to slow up the winning streak from their contemporaries.

Their latest single, “Cure,” is the perfect antidote to what’s happening on urban radio today. Chill, relaxed, and completely persuasive in a cajoling sort of way. Accompanied by band mates Max and Andris, Moonchild’s lead singer, Amber, has a cooing, caressing voice, the kind you’d imagine of cherubs singing in your ear. In this instance the angel is working to convince you to try love again. With lilting harmonies accenting Amber’s bright glow, the band supports the pastoral proceedings with an atmospheric backdrop that wouldn’t be out of place with the sophisticated Philly Soul of Philly International Records or, more recently, Jazzy Jeff’s Touch of Jazz productions. Three albums in, “Cure” is a perfect return for long time fans and a nice way to greet newcomers to this ongoing L.A. phenomenon.
