(February 19, 2019) More than a few people have compared modern day soul and jazz master Gregory Porter with the late, great Nat “King” Cole. Porter has often told audiences how much Cole’s music meant to him as he grew up, and he paid tribute to Cole in a recent tribute album.
Now, through modern technology, the two greats, separated by a half century, are performing together on the new single, “The Girl From Ipanema,” a bonus cut that will be included on the Ultimate Nat King Cole compilation, to be released on CD and digital formats on 15 March. A 2LP vinyl edition will follow on June 14.
The song will remind fans of the Grammy Award winning duet of Cole and his daughter Natalie on “Unforgettable,” 28 years ago. But the new duet has a different feel to it that is less reverential. “The Girl” has a cool factor to it, and two voices that truly blend in a nice way.
