(March 4, 2022) “Juice,” the new ballad by UK music producer Obsidian Cane with Lyriqe as the featured vocalist, is an homage to Mtume’s 1983 classic “Juicy Fruit.” The song drops a little less than two months after the passing of the legendary writer, producer, musician James Mtume. “Juice” uses the funky baseline and the seductive and atmospheric keyboard work of “Juicy Fruit” as the foundation for a tune that features different lyrics but captures “Juicy Fruit’s” sweet eroticism.

Lyriqe’s coyly seductive vocal gives the story of a woman looking forward to reconnecting with her lover after a long absence a sweetly erotic feel.  “Juice” doesn’t overdo it from a musical arrangement or lyrical standpoint. “Juice” has a wide open, not overly orchestrated feel. Cane doesn’t lean to heavily into the technology – there’s hint of 1980s era synth work here and a hint of programmed drums there in an instrumental conversation with a driving, mid-tempo funky bass line. The light touches match the song’s lyrics that lead the listener in the direction of the bedroom while also leaving something to the imagination.  Check out “Juice” here.
