(October 2, 2017) Well, this one caught us by surprise. Cinematographer and songwriter S. Craig Zahler has just issued a new feature film featuring Vince Vaughn, Brawl in Cell Block 99. And not only does the film concept recall many popular movies of the 1970s, but the movie also features a soundtrack (to be released on October 13) that will get the attention of classic soulheads. Featuring the O’Jays and Butch Tavares, the album has the big, orchestral, funky elements of urban 70s soundtracks.

Zahler tells us, “Conceptually, I approached each tune much as I would a novel or script by beginning with a basic character—the protagonist.   Some of these tunes were conceived to complement scenes in the movie, and others were written to serve as a direct counterpoint, but all were to be heartfelt journeys from the perspective of the songs’ protagonists.”

The first song getting play from the album is a funky, horn-filled number featuring the O’Jays. “Buddy’s Business” captures the feel of the classic action genre, and sounds just right in 2017.
