(March 11, 2017) “Heavenly” is one of those old jams that unfortunately gets overlooked even on the Quiet Storm formats that should be playing these kind of cuts. These days you’d be lucky to hear the tunes that Webster Lewis and D.J. Rogers are most famous for, “Give Me Some Emotion” and “Say You Love Me” respectively.

So when I heard Martin Luther take on this sweet ballad as a part of the drummer and producer Paul Tillman Smith’s compilation Bed Ballads: The Songs of Paul Tillman Smith, I listened closely. To say that Martin Luther’s husky, emotive and rangy baritone does this song justice would be an understatement. “Heavenly” is a song that definitely needs to be a part of the soul ballad canon, and this rendition is worthy of being considered in its own right.
