First Listen: PJ Morton and Mint Condition's Stokley refresh a Christmas classic

We’ve been following the careers of Mint Condition lead singer Stokley and longtime SoulTracks fave PJ Morton for years and years. But we’ve never heard them together…until now.

PJ, who is now a member of pop group Maroon 5 but still creates his own music, like last year’s excellent Gumbo, is readying the release of his first Christmas album, appropriately entitled Christmas with PJ Morton. The disc is a combination of new compositions and classics. And one of the cover songs is a slowed down, souled out version of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas,” which teams PJ and Stokley.

PJ told Billboard magazine, "Christmas and Christmas music were such a big part of my childhood growing up. My whole family is musical -- I’ve always wanted to do a Christmas album and now I’ve finally done it. I felt like a really soulful Christmas album was missing. Mariah Carey’s 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' captured the feeling of the classics. I knew I wanted to flip it to my style, and while recording it I kept hearing Stokley’s voice on it. I grew up a fan of Mint Condition and I knew he’d be perfect on it. Couldn’t be happier with how it turned out."

We think it sounds great. So check out this unique pairing and their fun take on a recent holiday classic.
