(March 15, 2019) The quintet Ranky Tanky has seemingly come out of nowhere over the past two years to make quite a stir in the music world. Their 2017 eponymous debut was an instant hit, and critical acclaim abounded.
The Charleston, South Carolina group, consisting of Quentin Baxer (percussion), Kevin Hamilton (bass), Quiana Parler (vocals), Clay ross (guitar/vocals) and Charlton Singleton (trumpet/vocals) plays the music of the Gullah culture of Southeastern Seal Island Region of the US, and their take is not like anything else you’ll hear on the radio.
Ranky Tanky is now debuting the stirring new single, “Freedom,” which leads the group’s upcoming album. Electric guitar and raw percussion open the number, leading into a song about the desire to overcome injustice, beautifully accented by Parler’s expressive vocals.
They take our homes
They take our names
They say that behind four walls
Is where we’ll remain
They take our dreams
They pull us apart
They’ll never know our strength
They’ll never know our hearts
We want freedom.
