First Listen: Rick Astley returns with a song of hope

(September 13, 2019) Back in 1987, you couldn't walk into a store or a bar without hearing deep-voiced, red haired, 21 year old UK singer, Rick Astley, and his ubiquitous international hit, "Never Gonna Give You Up." It was everywhere, and it thrust the unlikely young singer into a spotlight that has continued for more than three decades, with a song that has become iconic (just ask your teenage son or daughter).

The now 53 year old Astley is still performing, with an active fan base around the world. And he is preparing to release a new greatest hits compilation called The Best of Me, which should please both his most rabid fans and those who may be more casual about getting “Rick Rolled.”

The album also contains a new single that speaks to some of the pressures that folks around the world are facing in a troubling time. But “Every One of Us” gives a hopeful message of “a fire that burns so bright in every one of us,” uniting us despite our differences.

The song is a nice blend of rock and R&B, and Astley’s vocals are reliably muscular on this anthem. Check it out below and tell us what you think.
