But as we’ve written about before, the two genres have much more in common than some folks think. Storytelling and a keen sense of melody spell the best of both genres, and Rissi has plenty of both in her music.
She received much attention for 2007 debut, making her a pioneer as an African-American woman on the country charts.
More recently, Rissi moved from Nashville to North Carolina, married, and gave birth to her daughter. And she’s getting ready to release a new album, The Back Porch Sessions, this month.

The new 5-song EP features all original songs, which Rissi had a hand in writing. It's also one that has both of her Grammy winning producers/songwriters, Drew Ramsey (India.Arie, Robert Randolph, Jonny Lang) and Shannon Sanders (Randy Travis, Lyle Lovett, India.Arie), singing her praises.
The first single from the album is a gem. “Sweet Sweet Lovin’” is a bouncy number that should appeal to both soul and country fans. Says Rissi about the song, “After being gone for 5 years I wanted to come back with something that was 100% Rissi. This was the first song we (Drew Ramsey, Shannon Sanders, and I) wrote in the studio. ‘Sweet Sweet Lovin’ is not only my favorite on the EP but the song I think best represents my sound and the overall feel of this project, which is why we chose it to be the first thing anyone heard. It's a combination of country, soul, and pop - southern soul. Plus it's got that "roll your windows down and sing along out loud" vibe. It's hard not to dance or smile when you hear it."
