Deep fans of ‘80s soul may remember his voice as the lead on a regional hit called “Must Be Loving You” by the short-lived group Staca’ta.

Owens’ new single, “I Wanna Go Back,” finds him returning to the smooth midtempo kind of groove that established his fan base back then, and is distinctly sophisticated in production values and vocal arrangements. Influenced by Luther Vandross’ perennial, “Never Too Much,” the arrangement soothes with a danceable yet mellow beat over which Owens renders with sensitivity and passion a plea to return to the beginnings of finding love and romantic encounters.
