September 16, 2022 – Just over a year ago, we introduced you to the gifted new jazz vocalist, Samara Joy, then 21 years old, who wowed us with her independent, eponymous debut album. Her ascent since that time has been rapid and much deserved: Her artistry has made her an in-demand live performer, having now played clubs and festivals worldwide, and she has been signed by Verve, a label that knows how to nurture a young talent like hers.
We are pleased to share that Samara has just released her first album for Verve, Linger Awhile, which captures all that is delightful about her. Samara’s phrasing, control and use of dynamics are remarkable, and her voice is one for the ages: Rich, warm, playful, nuanced and authentic. We feature here her cover of “Misty,” which rendered this author a tad misty hearing this beautiful, 68-year old song in the graceful hands of a new generation. Bravo, Samara. Somewhere, the late Erroll Garner is smiling.
