(July 19, 2018) It’s been a decade since influential male quartet Shai released its last album (2007’s Love Cycle). Although prominent lead vocalist Carl Martin and fellow member Marc Gay left the fold awhile back, founding vocalists Garfield Bright and Darnell Van Rensalier stayed on board and recruited Dwaye Jones and George Spencer.

The group’s new CD, Musically Yours, primarily focuses on ‘90s-tinged midtempo soul/hip-hop contenders, but offers several interesting treats in left-of-center numbers sans the accompaniment of most instrumentation. On the near-a cappella “Passion Tattoo,” the fellas’ multi-layered harmonic patterns glide along smoothly in cruise control mode, with finger snaps and a bass-vocal ostinato providing the backdrop for a sultry, low tenor lead exploring the blurred lines between sensuality and spirituality.
