Second Listen: Spur of the Moment takes us "Deep" on great single

Life has a funny way of creating confluence, bringing together separate – sometimes seemingly random -- events together into something special that ultimately appears anything but random. That is the story for me and the legendary DC area band, Spur of the Moment.

In early January, a random Spotify “Discover Weekly” playlist brought to my attention the fantastic, jazzy ballad by Spur of the Moment and singer/songwriter Levi Stephens, “In Too Deep.” The song was so striking, both in the musicianship and the vocal arrangements, that I was immediately taken and vowed to dig deeper into the discographies of both artists.

Then a week later, I was a guest on the Capital Jazz Supercruise, a musical experience that I won’t soon forget. And, in the smallest of worlds, there as the unofficial “house band” of the cruise was…you guessed it…Spur of the Moment. I even ended up finding out that the gentleman sitting next to my wife and me at our second night’s dinner was a member of the group. And I spent the next several days hearing SOTM and its members gracing many of the great performances on the cruise.

For those of you new to SOTM, it is a group that has been a staple on the DC music scene (or the “DMV” as they call it) for two decades. They’ve worked with a who’s who of soul and jazz vocalists, from Al Jarreau to Maysa to Will Downing to Ledisi, and many, many more.

And while we originally missed the 2017 release of the group’s N2Deep album, we wanted to make up for it now, with our latest SoulTracks Second Listen. And we’ll feature the song that made me stop in my tracks when it hit me on Spotify.

So check out “In Too Deep” below and welcome Spur of the Moment to SoulTracks!
